Chelsea has made touch with a La Liga superstar who has a £427 million buyout clause
Chelsea is reportedly interested in 18-year-old Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde to help them overcome their present defensive crisis.
The young Spaniard is a product of the legendary La Masia and has made a total of seven appearances for the senior club, including two in the Champions League group stage last season.
Chelsea are interested in Balde’s profile, according to Spanish site Mundo Deportivo (h/t Daily Mail). The left-back can play as a left wingback as well as a left midfielder, which will appeal to Thomas Tuchel, who frequently employs rampaging full-backs.
Alejandro Balde is being considered as a possible Marcos Alonso replacement.
The Blues are said to have made touch with Balde’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to express their interest in the player. Chelsea reportedly inquired about the adolescent last summer and even the year before, indicating that their interest is long-standing.
Spain’s U19 team has capped Balde five times. In terms of his club career, he is said to be looking for more senior opportunities this summer and wants to leave Barcelona if he is only going to be a marginal player.
The left-contract back’s runs through 2024 and has a £427 million release clause. Balde is only 18 years old, but he already has an excellent resume. Is he, though, at Premier League level? No, not yet. He could, however, turn out to be a good signing for Chelsea.
Marcos Alonso has already expressed his desire to join Barcelona, while captain Cesar Azplicueta has also piqued Barcelona’s attention. Chelsea would be wise to take advantage of this circumstance if they can use it to their advantage when it comes to potentially signing the teenager.
Balde is unlikely to break into the starting XI just yet, but he can provide crucial support for Ben Chilwell, the first-choice left-back/left wingback. Balde will get his fair share of starts and opportunities to shine with Chelsea expected to fight for honours on all fronts.
He’s still young and could turn out to be a valuable asset in a few years. He will have the benefit of a great mentorship under Tuchel. Balde’s adaptability allows the German to experiment with him in a different position on the left flank, much like he did with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic as wingbacks. Let’s see what occurs next.
