Following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, Thomas Tuchel is in the midst of a defensive crisis and needs to improve his numbers ahead of the new season.

Chelsea is one of several clubs interested in Gvardiol, who is valued at £102 million, according to 90min, with the Blues ‘keeping tabs’ at this point of the process.

Spurs are also interested in the 20-year-old, who has impressed for RB Leipzig in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League since joining from Dinamo Zagreb last year.

Gvardiol’s father recently travelled to London to explore a move to Stamford Bridge, according to Croatian site 24Sata, while 90min believes their interest in the excellent defender is still at an ‘early level.’

Crook, though, confirmed that the Croatian international is on Chelsea’s summer wish list, alongside long-term target Jules Kounde.

Bringing in Gvardiol, who is not just comfortable in possession but also a natural left-footer, would seem to be the ideal substitute for Rudiger, who spent the majority of his time under Tuchel playing on the left side of a back three.

Gvardiol’s pass success percentage was a noteworthy 84 percent last season, according to WhoScored, and he made the most successful passes (70.6) of the entire Leipzig squad.

But the Croat isn’t just comfortable with the ball in his hands; he’s also an outstanding defender, which is why he’s being watched by some of Europe’s top coaches.

He was in the top three players for most clearances (1.9), interceptions (1.8), tackles (1.6), and blocks (1.6) according to WhoScored (0.4).

Gvardiol’s potential is evident, illustrating why Chelsea are interested, while ex-Croatia striker Ivica Olic has already described him as “amazing.” At 20 years old and with less than 100 senior games under his belt, there’s no guarantee he’ll perform the same in the Premier League.
