Raheem Sterling, Chelsea’s major forward transfer target, has been assured that if he signs, he will be picked ahead of Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, and Timo Werner. But that may not be the case for Kai Havertz, as manager Thomas Tuchel seeks to form a fresh assault sans Romelu Lukaku for the 2022/23 season.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, who is looking for a quick resolution to these negotiations, appears to have fulfilled the club-record signing’s requests, and he is now extremely close to finalizing his loan back to Inter Milan. Sterling is expected to be the top priority in this new Blues rebuild if Lukaku’s loan is finalized.

The Blues are optimistic of concluding a deal to sign the Three Lions international, according to The Athletic, with the price point being the only stumbling block at this moment. Sterling is also thought to be interested in going to London and has shown his interest by meeting with a number of officials at Chelsea to learn more about Thomas Tuchel and other parts of the club.

Ousmane Dembele and Christopher Nkunku are two attacking possibilities that could be considered in a reshuffle. It’s unclear how many attacking players will be added before the transfer window closes, and the defensive areas are also a source of concern with the departures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

Outgoings could be impacted by the major activity expected in the forward areas, as it is well known that players like Pulisic, Ziyech, and Werner are unhappy with their current roles in Tuchel’s squad, so there could be departures if Chelsea and Man City can agree on a £45 million figure for Sterling.

However, if all attackers stayed put and Sterling – who is highly regarded by both Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi – arrived, it was projected that, except from Havertz, he would be picked ahead of the others on a regular basis.

“If [Sterling] goes there, he starts,” ESPN expert Steve Nicol believes. With the exception of Havertz, I don’t believe he trusts Pulisic and Ziyech. They say he trusts Werner, but based on how many times he starts, I don’t think he’s really fond of him.

“The only other player outside Havertz is Mason Mount, and Sterling, if he joins Chelsea, will undoubtedly play more games.” You don’t go from City to Chelsea, who are way off the pace, fighting for the Premier League or the Champions League, without playing more games. Regardless matter who makes the choice, I believe it is a fantastic move for Chelsea because Sterling starts ahead of everyone else.”

Don Hutchison, a former Liverpool and West Ham midfielder, believes Sterling is underappreciated and thinks the Man City star is only getting better with age.

“I think he’s a hugely underestimated player,” he said on the BBC Football Daily podcast. “He’s got a lot of pieces in his armoury, he’s a great talent, and he’s gotten better as he’s gotten older.”

“I understand if Chelsea come in because it must be difficult for him and Man City players to play under Pep, especially when you’re not in the first 11 and you’re not one of the top boys there.” I believe it would be a bold move for Chelsea to sign him.”
